An Story of Surprising Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor

Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. My plan was to arrange a place to stay after getting there, but when I arrived, a large conference was happening and every single budget hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, not like the one back home, does not operate 24 hours. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on public transport and began walking in the direction of the casino, reasoning I might spend the night somewhere operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape to succeed at an interview the following day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.

I must have looked out of place since a woman spotted me walking aimlessly through the city center and asked whether I needed help. I explained my situation and immediately she offered I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: one filled rolls she brought back her evening job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location to rest to sleep.

Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she took as a young woman letting a man who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I was in my male privilege bubble and was oblivious about things like that. As a dad now, I’m amazed she did that – yet incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up attending ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of human compassion. My sincere desire is that life has rewarded her good deed abundantly. We could all use more people like that woman.
