Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and stated they should be taken into custody and penalized "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Content That Sparked the Controversy
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly served in military or defense roles.
"As we did, you all swore an oath to defend and defend this founding document," the lawmakers affirmed in the short video. "And right now, the risks to our constitution aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you should decline improper directives. No one has to execute commands that contravene the legal system or our founding principles."
Trump's Furious Reaction
The recorded statement seemed to trigger a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Nation. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader published a unified declaration censuring the comments.
"Violent politics has no place in America," they stated. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our country with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We clearly censure Donald Trump's offensive and risky calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these extreme social media posts and retract his dangerous rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.
Officials' Firm Reaction
The representatives who appeared in the video also issued a response.
"We identify as former service members and security experts who love this country and made an vow to defend and support the founding document of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that important obligation."
"What's most telling is that the former president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to repeat the law," they added. "Our service members should know that we have their protection as they execute their oath to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "Every American must join forces and censure the president's requests for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Political Comments
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the capital punishment of elected officials."
He continued: "This represents an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."
The Conservative official supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very harmful, you have prominent officials of the government advising soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also reportedly informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the language and decide all that."
Administration Statement
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the president is addressing," the representative said. "We see current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to defy the executive's proper directives."
She added: "The purity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to people getting killed, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally encouraging."
