Gun-wielding individuals have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, according to police.

The criminal group invaded the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.

Area inhabitants told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.

In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have increasingly been targeted for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they anticipate and pray for their children's secure homecoming.

Safety emergency in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in the last several months, with schools suffering the most of the unrest.
