Liverpool's Captain Admits Team Faces Crisis, Challenges Teammates on Accountability
Virgil van Dijk has delivered a scathing assessment of the club's disappointing title defence, confessing the reigning champions are in disarray and letting down head coach Slot while questioning whether every player is taking responsibility for the team’s slump.
The Dutch defender struggled to hold back his anger after Saturday’s heavy loss at Anfield by Forest, a result that left Liverpool in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a negative goal difference. “We had a productive three or four days’ preparation but in a game you are dealing with facts and the truth is we gave away a set piece in the opening period and a poor concession at the beginning after the break,” stated the defender. “As a team, we're certainly letting him down, but we’ve let ourselves down as well. The captain insisted that Liverpool’s issues extend past the recent additions. “It's difficult for all involved,” he said. “My expectation is for each player to be answerable on the field. We have to do that in order to motivate one another, to make each other better. If a teammate presses, you must join the press. These are fundamentals but they're lacking enough.”

The Dutchman continued: “In the current term we lack any steady form, we allow excessive scores, we are losing battles and everyone is responsible for it and I hope this is recognized. We have to take responsibility to reverse the situation and it is easy to point fingers but unity is essential. We have been through it together and won the league and all contributed, and during a tough time you have to stick together and not point fingers.
“You have to be a man and face the toughness and persist, again and again because surrendering is not an option then you are in the wrong environment in my view, because this club has been going through many adversity over those years and we’ve consistently emerged of it. But it doesn’t mean it is easy, it’s exhausting but there is only one path forward.”

The upcoming match in the domestic league is a visit to London Stadium next Sunday, after the midweek visit of PSV in the Champions League. He said: “Wednesday is another opportunity so how should I respond, dwell on the loss? No, I'll return and try to think how we can improve results and I trust that is the collective focus as well.”
