Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
