Putin Pledges Continuous Energy Shipments to India in Defiance of US Demands

Amid a defiant signal to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to maintain “uninterrupted” deliveries of energy resources to India. The announcement came as the two leaders met in New Delhi and affirmed their partnership were “resilient to external pressure.”

A Message Directed at the Western Countries

The statement, issued after the annual summit, seemed to be a direct challenge at western countries, who have tried to pressure New Delhi into scaling back its close relations with Moscow. The context comes after recent US actions, notably the imposition of trade penalties on India because of its acquisition of discounted Russian crude.

“Moscow remains a reliable exporter of fuel and anything needed for the growth of India’s industry,” the Russian president said. “Russia is prepared to persist in ensuring the uninterrupted supply of fuel for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, while not naming energy directly, supported the sentiment by stating that “a stable energy base has been a strong and vital foundation of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Defying American Pressure

Before the talks, during a media interview, Putin had questioned US interference on India's oil imports. He argued, “Should America is entitled to buy our atomic materials, then why can't India have the identical right?”

This trip represented his maiden visit to India since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a deliberate effort to demonstrate that the friendship between the two leaders persisted strongly.

A Personal Greeting

Employing an rare gesture, Prime Minister Modi welcomed directly Putin as he disembarked. They shared a warm hug as close allies before enjoying a one-on-one meal on Thursday evening.

He in his statement called India's alliance with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “built on reciprocal esteem and deep trust.”

Reaffirming Strategic Partnerships

Friday's talks produced multiple important deals across military and economic cooperation. A major outcome was the finalization of an strategic roadmap that runs to 2030, which aims to boost bilateral trade to one hundred billion dollars each year by the 2030 deadline.

The leaders also pledged to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Although Russia continues to be India's primary source of arms, its share has reduced lately as India aims to widen its sources.

The official release stressed an agreement on the co-development of cutting-edge weapons platforms, even if direct reference of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

In conclusion, Moscow and Delhi restated that in the “ongoing challenging, difficult, and volatile geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties continue to be resilient to external pressure.”
