The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
