The Gunners' Boss Acknowledges Future Tenure Hinges on Securing Trophies.
Ahead of marking his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to delivering trophies.
Reflecting on: The Arteta Era
Arteta was appointed on 20 December 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup victory a short time later. However, that initial silverware remains his only major honor following the departure of Unai Emery.
“Absolutely,” Arteta responded upon being asked about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And many things need to fall into place in the next few months as well to warrant that continuation.”
He will mark the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal faced immediately following his role was made public.
League Position and Pressure
With trailing Manchester City set to face West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This comes despite Arteta managing a squad that has endured over 100 injuries from the beginning of last season.
He currently has 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, however, he knows that success is required in the immediate future.
The Manager's Mandate
The manager expanded, stressing the daily requirement to prove his worth. “In my view a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you address the media, how you step into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”
Arteta continued, commending the unwavering support from the hierarchy, while singling out the team's buy-in as paramount. “At the end, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, willingness to improve and give the maximum to the team.”
Latest Fitness Blow
The squad heads into the weekend fixture dealing with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is likely to see him miss action for several weeks.
A Different Club
Regardless of the injury crisis and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are vastly different from when he first arrived.
He pointed to the team's performances as evidence of progress. “You look at the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the caliber we've reached.”
Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
