One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside his partner, disclosed how he will independently develop this new flavor as part of a personal series highlighting causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.

Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators and Parent Company

This latest announcement deepens the ongoing tension among the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders have claimed how Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol for Solidarity

The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options plus additional components.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has become an emblem of support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism and Current Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.

The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which originally established several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Changes and Future Intentions

The founder indicated that he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.

This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years with the organization, citing worries that its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence so that it can achieve the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
