Virginia's New Governor Creates History as First Female Governor

Over 250 years, Virginia has been led by seventy-four state executives, each one of them men. This week, Abigail Spanberger broke this longstanding tradition by winning the election as the first female governor in the commonwealth's history.

A Campaign Focused On Economic Concerns and Targeted Opposition

The former US congresswoman and Central Intelligence Agency case officer won with a election strategy that stressed economic pressures and deliberately opposed the former president's agenda instead of the president himself.

Background and Academic Journey

Born in a New Jersey town on August 7, 1979, she moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at her early teens. Her dad was an army veteran who subsequently worked in police work; her mother was a nurse and volunteer.

She enrolled in the University of Virginia, receiving a degree in French studies. After graduating, she worked briefly as a classroom instructor before pursuing a career in public service.

“I was raised understanding that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” she informed attendees at a rally in Norfolk, Virginia over the weekend.

Government Roles

At the Postal Service, she investigated involving narcotics, abusers and financial criminals. She served search and arrest warrants, frequently being the sole female on the operation squad. She then entered the Central Intelligence Agency and specialized in national security, serving undercover and overseas.

Personal Crossroads

In 2014, she and her spouse, an technical professional, faced a decision. Residing on the west coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They took out a globe and asked their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. the commonwealth, she answered, because “everyone we love reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we opted to shift from a federal career, to state involvement because she was correct. All our relatives lives in Virginia.”

Entry into Politics

Back in the commonwealth, she joined Moms Demand Action, which combats gun violence, and started a youth group. In 2017, she chose to seek office, which people told her was a “long shot” because no Democrat had secured the congressional seat in decades.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was doing with his executive power and how he was creating conflict. And I saw my member of Congress over and over again oppose the healthcare law. And I knew I had to do something. So for the record: I was victorious.”

Moderate Stance

In Washington, she quickly became associated with the centrist group, a collection of moderate and fiscally moderate lawmakers. She focused on specific policies: bringing broadband to rural areas, combating narcotics trade and veterans’ services.

She built a standing for collaborating with colleagues across the aisle and was frequently recognized as the most cooperative member of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about messaging that she felt turned off independents, cautioning her party against partisan language that could be used against them in swing areas.

Political Alliance

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a member of the “mod squad” in opposition to the progressive “group” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Run for Governor

In that autumn, she announced she would step down for a fourth term and would instead campaign for Virginia's leadership in the next election.

Her campaign focused on ideas of civic duty, support for education and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her intelligence experience lent her credibility on defense issues and she described government work as a vocation instead of a career.

Successful Campaign

This enabled her to overcome rival candidate her challenger's attacks on cultural issues, notably the assertion that she is an radical on civil rights and health care for transgender people.

Spanberger, who stated that local school districts should determine whether transgender students can join school athletics, portrayed her rival as the candidate more out of step with the center of the Virginia electorate.
