While Swimmers Ran From Attack, Viral Image Shows Rescuer Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Scene.
Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her back yard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, similar to other local residents, heard loud noises reverberating through the suburb.
“We all thought the same, but I considered it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. She left her apartment, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw signaled a crisis was unfolding.
As she stood on the avenue, talking to a pair who had rushed up the slope still dripping wet, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. The person was a rescuer, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.
“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the path that all the others was trying to get away from, and hauling that large equipment and unshod … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every part of you would instruct you to move in the other direction.
“Without a second thought, but just totally pedal to the metal sprinting.”
A Symbol of Heroism In the Wake of Tragedy
The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous acts of valour in the wake of the violent incident.
Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, police and medical teams attending to numerous those hurt.
Local Reaction and Assistance
Doolan’s story was just one of many to be shared by the community, with the beach facility adjacent to the site of the attack transforming into a makeshift treatment center. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, such as rushing into the ocean to save people who were struggling.
Following the tragedy, comments of gratitude circulated widely. An online statement shared thanks for the responders who showed that “goodness will always conquer darkness”.
The group of lifeguards issued a communication, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.
“Thank you all for your supportive messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the compassion for our team,” the group commented. “In time, we will share our stories in the aim that it helps those involved.”
Local Government Praise
Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many professional lifeguards, remarked that the staff acted heroically from the moment the violence commenced through to late that nighttime.
“People have shared so many powerful stories, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is incredible,” commented a council representative.
“The team show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned coastlines safe for the public, but what we saw on that day should be commended.
“As we grieve and come to terms with the horror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much light we have seen in the presence of such hatred.”
